Reviews
From families across the Klang Valley
Accounts from participants who attended the workshop and coordination programmes between June and July 2025.
Norlia Razak
Subang Jaya, Selangor
"I was not sure what to expect from the Calm Conversations Workshop. What I got was a half-day that genuinely changed how I speak to my daughters about the changes happening in our household. The frameworks sound simple when explained, but there was something about practising them in the room with my family present that made them stick."

"The records organisation session was more practical than I anticipated. We spent about three hours sorting through documents I had been putting off for months. I appreciated that the facilitator was very clear about what they were and were not there to help with — there was no ambiguity about our role and theirs. The referral list for legal matters was useful too."

"We did the full Coordination Programme. It took about five weeks because of everyone's schedules, but the pace worked for us. The family binder has already been used twice to find documents we needed. What I found most helpful was that Rosnah and Azlan stayed consistent in tone throughout — calm, practical, and not pulling in any direction."

"I came alone to the records session because my husband was not ready to attend. The facilitator adjusted easily and we still covered most of what we needed. I had a clear list of what to come back and do together, and a list of professionals to contact about the things outside Hearthlink's scope. Very practical, very straightforward."

"The workshop was good. My sister and I came together, and while we already knew we needed to improve how we speak to each other, having specific tools to practise made a real difference. I do think the session could run slightly longer — we could have used more practice time. That said, the take-home guide has been genuinely useful since."

Lim Boon Keat

"We completed the Coordination Programme as a family of four — two parents and two adult children. The process was slower than I expected (the best part of six weeks), but looking back, the pace was appropriate given everything we were working through. The check-ins after completion were a helpful touch that I did not expect to use but ended up valuing."

Case Studies
A closer look at three family journeys
These accounts, shared with permission, describe what families brought to Hearthlink, what happened in the sessions, and where they were afterwards.
The Situation
Communication had broken down between parents and an adult child
A family of three in Shah Alam were finding that conversations about household changes kept escalating, with each party leaving feeling unheard. They were not looking for counselling — they wanted practical tools.
What Happened
Calm Conversations Workshop, attended together
All three attended the half-day workshop. Using the listening framework from the session, they identified that a pattern of interruption was one of the main drivers of escalation. They practised a simple pause-and-reflect technique and left with a shared reference guide.
Three Months Later
Fewer escalations; family now using the guide independently
They reported that the frequency of heated conversations had dropped noticeably. The reference guide was still in use. The family had also followed the referral to a solicitor for the formal aspects of their situation, which they felt clearer about addressing after the workshop.
"It sounds basic — but nobody had ever just sat down with us and taught us how to listen properly. That was the part that shifted things." — Workshop participant, Shah Alam
The Situation
A household's shared documents were completely disorganised
Following a separation, a Petaling Jaya household needed to identify and separate shared documents, but had no system and no shared understanding of what existed or where it was held.
What Happened
Shared Planning & Records Organisation session
One parent attended alone. Over approximately three hours, every document category was reviewed using the provided templates. Items requiring formal professional handling were listed separately, with a specific referral to the appropriate Selangor legal aid service provided at the end.
The Outcome
Clear folder system in place; legal path identified
The participant left with a labelled folder covering all key document categories and a written list of the formal steps needed. They described the session as removing a significant source of daily stress — "just knowing where things are changed how I felt about the whole situation."
"I had been dreading sorting through everything for weeks. Doing it with a structured process in a calm room made it much less daunting." — Records session participant, PJ
